Meet Our Team!

Welcome to the new Boarding Team from Kingsley Lodge and John Milton Hall for 2022/23. Read on to find out a bit more about everyone here to support you this year.

Head of Boarding: Jonathan Scruby

Hello everyone!

My name is Jonathan Scruby, and I am extremely honoured to be joining The Hammond from a large, traditional and competitive sporting high school in Durban, South Africa where I have been working for the last 14 years as the Head of Boarding, Director of Rugby and Teacher of Biology.

Having had the privilege of caring for high performing learners for some time now, I am excited to help create an environment that will best serve the learners in ways that will allow them to pursue the unrelenting ambition they have to achieve their goals. Most of all, creating a sense of belonging, ensuring each young person feels and understands that they are extremely unique and valuable to everyone around them.

I look forward to meeting you all soon.

Assistant Head of Boarding: Catherine Broadhurst

Hi everyone!

My name is Catherine Broadhurst and I cannot wait to join the team at The Hammond and to meet you all!

I join The Hammond from a traditional boarding school in the North of England, supporting the learners as they joined the school. Prior to this, I was a houseparent at a high performing gifted and talent school overseas and started my career in education as teacher of Design Technology.

I share Jonathan’s ambition to help our learners in achieving their ambitions and goals. For this to happen, it is important that our learners feel supported and cared for and therefore it is important to create an environment and culture of support and care, with a focus on ensuring the wellbeing of our students is at the forefront of what we do.

When I am not working, I am spending time with my very mischievous dog, Gus, exploring Cheshire and North Wales countryside as well as working on developing my own knowledge by completing my MA.

I am so excited to get stuck in and meet you all!

Boarding Pastoral Assistants: Lucia Martin

Hello lovely people of The Hammond.

We are so excited to have you with us, and we want to look after you, however we can every step of the way. My name is Lucia Martin and I feel lucky to be able to work closely with you all and get to know everything about you, from your favourite snacks to what is making you nervous about tomorrow.

I studied a BSc in Psychology, where throughout I supported my fellow course mates, society friends and hall buddies in my Welfare representative roles. Throughout College, I was Deputy Head Girl and designed a support network to fully support my peers of all ages, which is something that I definitely want to see in Boarding. I also went to School in Chester, so I am very familiar with our wonderful city.

I am qualified in Health and Nutrition and currently studying for a qualification as a Group Exercise instructor. My passion for eating well and eating to fuel hasn’t always been the case! So if you need any help on knowing how I transitioned from a beige food diet to a balanced diet (yes that balance includes chocolate, carbohydrates, veg, protein, eating out, crisps, doughnuts and fruit), lets talk! As performing athletes, you need fuel and nourishment as well as enjoyment, which is important to get in the right balance.

Undertaking A Level Theatre and being cast as Glinda in 'The Wizard of Oz' certainly taught me how to balance practicing and revision! I can't wait to encourage our children to get involved with whatever opportunities, no matter how big or small, that come our way. I have a wealth of experience of smaller extra curricular activities, sporting activities or charity adventures. I spent a month building a kitchen for a school in Eswatini when I was 15 which contributed to my self-development in skills such as resilience, motivation, health and cultural appreciation which I would love to share with our children

I am always available to talk, and I am only a Teams Message or a few doors away and we can talk about anything. Let’s sit down and have a drink and a snack and talk it all through.

Boarding Pastoral Assistants: Carla Gore

Hi everyone!

My name is Carla Gore, and I am so proud to say I work in our wonderful boarding community.

I started working at The Hammond with our catering team in 2018, and now work as a member of the Boarding Team. I am a Level 2 Teaching Assistant, and previously worked as a teaching assistant with children aged 8 to 11 and in an early years setting in Cyprus with children aged 0-4.

I have been working in boarding since October 2020 and have loved every minute. It's my first time working with this age group, but I enjoy every minute. The young people are all amazing and so talented and it is a privilege to work with them and to be part of the Hammond community.

In my spare time I love to go hiking with my family and two doggies we spend a lot of time outdoors in Snowdonia, the peak district and the lakes.

I also have 2 children who attend the school.

Boarding Pastoral Assistant: Francesca Burton

My name is Francesca Burton and I have been working in Kingsley Lodge boarding house Since September 2021, loved my first few months settling in and I am looking forward to the year ahead. I believe in creating a ‘home from home’ environment and ensuring their differences are celebrated.

Before I joined The Hammond boarding team; I completed a degree in Linguistics and the English Language at Bangor University in my studies I was able to develop a keen interest in helping people to succeed and not letting barriers to learning affect their progress. Whilst I was at university, I worked in an outdoor activity centre in Southern France which enlightened a passion for travel and working with young people; therefore, during my studies I worked at an outdoor activity centre in the South of France and I continued to gain experience working with the public for a few years until I decided to study for a PGCE in Secondary English.

I am now a qualified English Teacher and I have gained a breath of knowledge on working with young people and how to support them in an educational setting. I like to spend my spare time going to the theatre, crocheting, reading and doing lots of travelling (when time and restrictions allow). I want to make the students time at The Hammond a positive experience and feel part of the community.

Hi all!

My name is Carla Jeune Scruby, and I am so excited to meet all of our

Hammond boarders. I am a qualified attorney, currently practicing in the Republic of South Africa, and my passion is to work with young people to help them find their

voice and place in this word. I am extremely excited to make the move over to the United Kingdom and I am thrilled to have an opportunity to

work at The Hammond. Dance and drama have been a passion of mine since the age of 3 and I look forward to being surrounded by the incredible talents of The Hammond students. As the saying goes, “there’s no business, like show business.”

Assistant Houseparent: Barbara Phoenix

Hi everyone!

My name is Barbara Phoenix, and I have worked at the Hammond for three and a half years. I have spent a large part of my working life in Education and hold qualifications in British Sign Language for the Deaf. I have had some other interesting jobs; Casino Croupier, Children's Nannie and Pie Maker to name a few!

I am always in awe of the Hammond Students, whom I see in Boarding being just normal young people. "Miss, I can't find my pinks, leotard, I don't like spiders" turn into truly accomplished Performers.

I never wish to lose the thrill of watching them on Stage doing what they are meant to do. Hammond boarders are so special and wonderful, and it is a privilege to help them as they develop and grow.

Graduate Boarding Tutors: Bethany Edwards

Hi!

My name is Bethany Edwards and I have just finished my Musical Theatre Degree at The Hammond. I come from Wistaston and went to high school and sixth form in Nantwich.

I have been involved in dance and musical theatre my whole life. But outside of this I have been heavily involved in Scouting. I love camping, heights, and outward-bound activities, and hold both my Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award and Queen’s Scout awards.

As well as this, I compete internationally in Air Rifle Shooting and am on the British Shooting Rifle Development Academy.

I am really looking forward to working with the young people at The Hammond and hope that I can encourage them to have some wonderful experiences while they are away from home.

Graduate Boarding Tutors: Shannon Rutherwood

Hi!

My name is Shannon Rutherwood and am so excited to start working with the wonderful young people of The Hammond. I recently graduated from the University of Chester with a PGCE in Secondary Drama (QTS); as well as this, I have attained a master’s degree in Contemporary Performance Practices from Royal Holloway, University of London and a bachelor’s degree in Drama and Theatre Studies from the University of Chester.

I have been working at Costa Coffee over the course of my degrees as well as completing teacher training at schools within the Chester area. I am very excited to join The Hammond community as since studying for my PGCE I have found that I enjoy working with children as they bring so much joy and fascination to the job. I cannot wait to be part of their journey at The Hammond!

I guess an interesting fact about myself would be I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in 2015 and raised over £3000 for a clean water charity. I can’t wait to start, and I look forward to this new adventure.
