You’re forever told as a Liverpool fan that a ‘champions league night at Anfield’ is something you don’t want to miss, we have all heard the great stories about Liverpool playing in Europe, the ac Milan comeback to win the champions league and gerrards wonder goal against Olympiacos but on the 7th may 2019 I witnessed history for myself as Liverpool played Barcelona after a 3-0 defeat at the camp nou. The build up had been huge ‘could the mighty reds do it again’ was written all over nearly every newspaper you could find and there was a calm before the storm type of atmosphere circling Anfield. Walking out into the stadium after you have grabbed your hot drink from the boy behind the stand who only works there because it’s free tickets basically never gets old, but tonight I felt like I had walked out into Anfield for the first time again. As the players walked out onto the pitch and you’ll never walk alone blasted through the Anfield speakers the crowd erupted as if it was all of us playing on the pitch, my grandad then leaned over to me and said ‘we have the advantage already’ I asked ‘how come’ he had a grinning smile on his face as he replied back ‘Liverpool are playing with 55 000 players and Barcelona are playing with 11’.

Instantly Liverpool applied a relentless pressure forcing Barcelona back and giving them no space to breathe, Liverpool scored and Anfield roared like a burning fire there was no holding back from anyone but we still had a long way to go, as half time came we made our way back to the drinks stand the smell of burning hot pies and the overuse of paco rabanne’s 1 million aftershave to cover up the smell of sweat surrounded the air like a gas, we were hopeful, everyone was but we needed a big second half. As we prepared are self for the second half my grandad once again turned to me and said ‘you’re about to witness the greatest 45 minutes of football ever seen at Anfield’ I think he knew what was coming next.

The whistle blew and once again the fans let Barcelona know that they were playing the game to, it seemed like Liverpool had got a 12th man on the pitch as Barcelona looked outnumbered and ready to go back to Spain. The Liverpool youngest Trent Alexander-Arnold collected the ball on the right side of the field and burst down the right flank like a lion chasing down its prey, he looked up into the box and whipped a cross, the sheer speed of the ball took it right past Sadio mane and into the path wijnaldum were he smashed through the ball

BANG

‘Oh my word they have got another one’ Anfield lit up once again as we knew now it was really game on. The Liverpool players didn’t celebrate they raced straight back and prepared for battle once again, Barcelona slugged back taking as much time as possible and then kicked off once again, Liverpool charged like a Roman army and suffocated the players trying to stop them in their path. It must of only been 3 minutes as shaqiri got the ball deep on the left wing and crossed it in over the Barcelona

‘Go on go on’

Wijnaldum jumped and headed the ball into the top corner of the net

‘Ohh it’s 3 Liverpool are all the way back’

This time Liverpool did celebrate in front of the famous kop as Anfield turned into a sea of red, I couldn’t believe what I was witnessing were the mighty reds going to make it 4, the sound was something I’ve never heard in all my times going to Anfield and sitting in the kop it was magical. The ref blew the whistle to kick it off once again and a huge roar blasted round as he did so urging the players on to get one more, the ball went out for a corner and everyone switched off I had this weird sensation that something big was about to happen. Trent Alexander-Arnold placed the ball down and started to walk away from the ball, suddenly he quickly turned and glided the ball into the path of divock Origi

‘CORNER TAKEN QUICKLY ORIGI’

Anfield exploded, no one held back, no one doubted that Liverpool had won everyone was going for it the players were going mental the crowd was going mental, Liverpool was going mental. Now we just needed to hold it out for a few more minutes but everyone knew we had done it, the tension was filling up the stadium people constantly looking back and forward to check the time and then the whistle blew

‘Messi matched on Merseyside’

A huge weight felt like it had been lifted off everyone as there were people hugging and in tears after what just happened, my grandad turned around and hugged me tighter then he ever has before ‘you just can’t doubt us’ he said wiping the steam off his glasses, I was speechless and amazed no one could believe that it had happened. The players lined up in front of the kop as a spine tingling rendition of you’ll never walk alone rang around the stadium it was emotional to say the least and seeing my grandad singing off the 30 years off pain was a sight to beheld, as we made our way out of the stadium which we entered 2 hours ago sigh hope In our hearts my grandad for the final time turned to me and said

‘God we need to get you home you have school tomorrow.'
