John-Paul Birss aka The Cakeman

We are beyond proud of the ingenuity of our current and former students and how they've reacted to this year's events. Not least, for Hammond Professional Musical Theatre student John-Paul Birss.

"This was the beginning. This is me, The Cakeman.

I think firstly I made scones for my wife Ashley & I during Lockdown 1.0. It started pretty much from here. Before this, all I had made was a Banana Bread. I honestly I’m shocked at where I am today and that’s down to your support. I’m currently sat on the floor in my tiny kitchen pleasantly overwhelmed with orders and posting them nationwide. The Cakeman accidentally fell into my arms and it’s one of the best accidents and best things to come out of lockdown. I found a new passion.

To those who don’t know me, I’m a performer by trade. Before Covid-19 I had just finished performing in Mamma Mia! I have focused on my career for most of my life and never faltered or wavered. I never had the time to stop and breathe. I knew what I wanted, I didn’t stop and have been to hundreds and hundreds of auditions to achieve the dream. But now in this terrible time in history, I was given the gift of time. I had the time to spend with Ashley, and to explore other avenues that my creative mind could go. This is where ‘The Cakeman’ was born. I want to thank all of you who have bought my products. I promise you I still get excited to get an order. I strive to ensure it’s the best going out. Sometimes, and my wife and family will stand testament to this I bake late into the night to ensure overnight orders get completed for the next day.

Please continue to support the little guys like myself who are striving to pay the bills, put food on the table and build something that is a little bit special to them and the people who buy from them. The Cakeman thanks you.
